The Reality of Jim's Position
Unfortunately for Jim, he could be killed for running away unlike Huck. I don't think Huck understands the how bad Jim has it if they were to be caught. If Huck were to be caught he would be greeted with open arms for coming back and still being alive while Jim could face death or a slave breaker. Even though Huck knows that that could happen to Jim I don't think he understands the stress that Jim has and how scared Jim actually is of just the idea of being caught. If Huck really did understand I think he would be a lot more cautious when venturing out among the island whenever they are hunting and gathering supplies.

I agree that Huck is not fully aware what would happen if Jim and him were found. Huck just understand that they need to be hidden from society, but does not fully comprehend the consequences that would follow.
ReplyDeleteThat is very true Huck doesn't really understand in how much trouble Jim would be in he would probably be killed.
ReplyDeleteRight, Huck does not understand thoroughly the consequences of Jim's escape. He understands that white people and black people are cleary different because of the way he was raised, in the place he is living. But, he's never really seen the cruelty that white people place on the African American slaves. If he had, he wouldn't not be ok with seeing Jim in the island when he confessed he had run away.
ReplyDeleteThis is true, Jim could face serious consequences for running away. I disagree that Huck would be welcomed back with open arms though. I think people would be happy to see that he isn't dead and all, but i think they would bat an awkward eye at him for "harboring a slave" He might even get in a lot of trouble for this. I'm not sure how exactly they would look at it in the eyes of the law though, being that Huck is a young teen.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree with the last part of the comment because I believe that Huck feels completely safe on the island and so he doesn't feel he has anything to be afraid of. If Huck knew that there were people out for him and Jim nearby then he would be more careful, of course, but assuming that the reason Huck isn't being super sneaky and careful only because he doesn't feel the same fear as Jim does as a runaway slave.
